ACCT Philly Alerts Pet Owners to Scammers Targeting Missing Pets

ACCT Philly is warning pet owners about a new scam targeting those desperately searching for their missing pets. Over the past month, we have received multiple reports of individuals being contacted by scammers posing as ACCT Philly’s Animal Protection Officers. The scammers claim to have found the missing pet—often injured—and demand payment to return the animal to its owner.

Recently, one of our adopted dogs, Gucci, slipped out of his leash four days ago while chasing a squirrel. To assist in the search, we created a Google Voice number to accept tips via text. Within 24 hours, four different numbers sent messages, two of which falsely claimed to represent animal control. These individuals attempted to trick our team into providing verification codes, which were actually Google Voice codes. If shared, these codes would allow scammers to create new Google Voice accounts linked to our number, enabling further fraudulent activity.

ACCT Philly is working to gather more details; however, information remains limited as scammers frequently use untraceable phone numbers or aliases.

We urge the public to exercise caution when communicating with unknown individuals regarding missing pets. Here are some tips to help avoid falling victim to these scams:

  • Verify the identity of the person contacting you. Request specific details about your pet or ask for proof that they are with animal control.

  • Do not share verification codes or sensitive information. Scammers may use these codes to gain control of your accounts or create fraudulent ones.

  • Avoid sending money to strangers. Reputable organizations or individuals will not demand payment upfront to return a lost pet.

If you are missing a pet, please file a lost pet report on Petco Love Lost and check out lost pet tips on our website.
